One of my favorite exercises is taking the G major scale at the third fret and playing the scale in thirds.
When trying this exercise make sure you are playing it slowly enough to get it right the first time and picking 3 times on each note which will help you get it right the first time.
Here is how the thirds work:
First lets look at the G major scale.
The G Major scale:
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do Re
G A B C D E F# G A
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 2
When I say thirds I mean playing every other note in the scale rather than each note consecutively.
In thirds that would be:
Do Me G B 1 3
Re Fa A C 2 4
Mi So B D 3 5
Fa La C E 4 6
So Ti D F# 5 7
La Do E G 6 8
Ti Re F# A 7 2
Here is the tablature:
The G Scale
